Student Loan Forgiveness is a benefit offered by the U.S. Department of Education that lets eligible students have their federal student loans forgiven if they meet certain requirements. Borrowers who qualify can choose to have their debt forgiven or have the money that would have been used to pay off their loans sent directly to them, as long as they are enrolled in repayment and/or making payments on time.
There are three different kinds of programmes that help pay off student loans. These programmes are based on how long the student has been out of school before they apply for their loans to be forgiven. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is the most helpful of these (PSLF). With this programme, a graduate who works in public service can get the rest of their loans paid off after 10 years of making payments on time.
The William D. Ford Direct Loan Program (FLA) and the Federal Perkins Loan Program (PLP) are the last two. Graduates who work in certain fields can get some of their loans forgiven through these programmes. Graduates who work in a field listed on the U.S. Department of Education's website as a "eligible occupation" can choose to have their loans forgiven through either the FLA or PLP programmes.
How to Get Your Student Loans Written Off or Forgive
By taking a few easy steps, graduates may be able to get their student loans wiped out. They should first look into their loan options and figure out exactly what it is they want. Then, they should apply for their benefits on the StudentAid.gov website.
Steps 1-2: Go online to apply for your benefits.
Go to the StudentAid.gov website to find out what programmes you qualify for. Once you've found the right programme, go to the page where you can apply and follow the instructions. Most of the time, you'll have to fill out a form that asks for personal information. This will help your loan officer figure out if you qualify for the programme and, if so, how much you will get.
Step 3: Fill out the paperwork
After you fill out the form, you'll get a letter telling you if you were accepted into a loan forgiveness programme. If your application wasn't accepted, you'll be told why. If you were accepted, you'll get a confirmation email with information about how to get the money.
Step 4: Be sure to keep track of everything.
Make sure to keep all of the paperwork that goes along with your loan application. Make copies of your tax returns, letters from employers, and proof of work. Get a copy of your W-2 form from your employer if they don't tell you to keep one. Keep this information safe and easy to find so you can use it in the future.
